Laser Hair Removal

Let Blue Haven Medical Spa laser away your unwanted body hair leaving you with smooth, beautiful skin.    All areas of the body can be treated.  During hair removal, the laser’s handpiece is placed against the skin and directs the laser’s energy at the hair follicle.  The hair follicle absorbs the energy, eventually causing it to fall out.  Hairs in their active growth phase are most sensitive to laser energy and the most likely to be successfully removed with each treatment.  On average, about 20% of our hair follicles are in the growth phase at any given time.  Therefore, most people need about 6-10 sessions for full results.  Sessions are repeated every 4-12 weeks, depending on the area of the body.  Laser hair removal is considered a permanent reduction, although many people eventually have some regrowth and will need touch-up sessions every 1-2 years.

Is it painful?

While there is usually some discomfort with laser hair removal, most people find it to be very tolerable and much less painful than waxing.  The level of discomfort depends on a number of factors, such as the density of the hair and the area of the body being treated.  Some areas may be entirely painless.   Blue Haven Medical Spa offers ways to minimize discomfort if needed, such as adjusting the energy level of the laser or by using our chilled air machine which cools the skin before and during the treatment.

Can laser hair removal be done on dark skin?

Yes.  At Blue Haven Medical Spa, we have 2 different lasers available to use depending on the client’s skin type.  For dark skin (types V-VI), we use a long-pulse Nd-Yag laser for hair removal.  It is safest type of laser available that can remove hair on dark skin.    The Nd-Yag laser has a longer wavelength which allows the energy to bypass the skin level and penetrate deeper down to the hair follicles.

For lighter skin types (I-IV) and lighter brown hair, we use the Advantage diode laser by Lutronic.  The diode laser has a more superficial wavelength allowing more effective and faster results.  It also features a much larger handpiece size, which means faster treatments.

Can hair of any color be removed?

Unfortunately, because the target of the laser beam is dark pigment, laser hair removal is not very effective for naturally blonde, red, white or gray hairs.

How much does it cost?

At Blue Haven Medical Spa, we charge for the amount of time spent lasering, rather than a price per body part.  The Nd-Yag laser, which has a 1 cm spot size, costs $100 per 15 minutes.  The Advantage diode laser, which is faster with a 3 X 1 cm spot size, costs $100 per 10 minutes.  In general, small areas can be treated within a 10-15 minute time frame (such as facial hair, underarms, bikini line, etc).  Lower legs, back, chest, and abdomen are usually 30-45 minutes on the Nd-Yag laser and 20-30 minutes on the Advantage diode laser.

Do I need to shave prior to the treatment?

Yes.  The area treated should be shaved the day of the treatment or the day before in order to minimize any hair on the outside of the skin.  Hair on the outside can burn and will reduce the laser energy delivered to the hair follicle where it has its beneficial effect.  Waxing, tweezing, sugaring, or depilatory creams should also be avoided before treatment as this removes the hair inside the follicle.  Without a hair inside the follicle, laser hair removal would not have any effect.
