PlasmaMD Treatment

What it is?

The PlasmaMD is an advanced non-invasive skin lifting, skin tightening and rejuvenation device used to combat wrinkles, loss of collagen and sagging skin. As we age, the dermal layer of our skin thins, we produce less collagen, and we lose elasticity. All of these factors produce sagging and wrinkling of the skin. Plasma energy treatments can be used for a number of areas to dramatically enhance the skin quality, health and appearance without the need for invasive surgery. The PlasmaMD is an FDA approved, CE approved device used to perform fibroblast therapy, a technique used to stimulate production of collagen and elastin in the skin.

How does it work?

Plasma is the 4th state of matter alongside liquid, solid and gas. Plasma is a hot ionized gas. The characteristics of plasmas are significantly different from those of ordinary neutral gases. The PlasmaMD uses ionized nitrogen. A handheld plasma “pen” is held very close to the skin without touching it. It generates low-frequency electrical energy to form a plasma “arc.” The arc creates a small wound in the superficial skin, and the heat generated transfers to the deeper, structural dermal layer of the skin. The controlled wound created by the heat will recruit cells called fibroblasts. These cells are responsible for healing wounds by producing new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. This is why the treatment is also known as “fibroblasting”. Fibroblasts take about 3-6 months to finish making the new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, so the benefits of plasma treatments will continue to improve gradually.

Results:

• Stimulates new collagen (provides strength), elastin (provides flexibility), and hyaluronic acid (attracts water which gives a hydrated, plumped quality).
• Skin is resurfaced for a smoother, baby-skin texture
• Lifted, firmer skin with improved tone
• Skin Rejuvenation, improved health
• Reduction of pore size
• Reduction of redness and pigment
• First energy-based treatment that can be used to tighten the skin around the eyes without the need for eye protection

What is the downtime for PlasmaMD treatments?

• Average of 8 days downtime on the face and neck. Treatments elsewhere on the body typically take longer to heal.
• Redness, swelling and scabbing in the treatment area is expected
• Swelling usually begins the day following your treatment, and peaks around day 3
• After day 3, swelling subsides and scabs form.
• Scabs normally begin to fall off around day 6 and 7 (for face and neck)

Please be aware that the days indicated are simply guidelines for average healing time. Healing times are individual and different between clients, even for the same treatment. Healing time and results may be negatively compromised by not following the aftercare instructions: no drinking alcohol, no smoking, and no picking/scrubbing. If your health is compromised in any way, this can also extend your healing time and negatively affect your results.

An optional treatment to speed healing and boost results is Alastin Nectar. This topical product uses Tri-Hex Technology to clear out damaged collagen and elastin prior to the procedure, creating more space for healthier collagen and elastin to form. We recommend using this twice daily for 2 weeks prior to your treatment. Using it during the healing process also accelerates the healing rate in our experience.

Another optional boost is to take an oral vitamin C supplement (up to 2000 mg per day) during the healing process. This gives the immune system a boost and helps with repair.

What are the cautions/contraindications for the PlasmaMD?

• Recent sun exposure or tan. Clients must wait until any tan has faded before receiving treatment. Also, no spray tans for at least 4 weeks before treatment.
• Darker skin types. The PlasmaMD can only be safely used on Fitzpatrick I-III skin types. Darker types could have changes in pigmentation, so this treatment is not recommended.
• Wounds, active infections, and skin disorders, including cold sores, acne breakouts, psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis cannot be treated.
• Recent surgery (eyelid surgery, facelifts, brow lifts, etc, must wait a minimum of 3 months after surgery for a PlasmaMD treatment.
• Conditions causing poor wound healing, such as cancer treatments, kidney and liver disease, lupus, diabetes, or use of steroids cannot be treated.
• Recent injectable treatments like Botox or fillers should wait a minimum of 3 weeks before a PlasmaMD treatment. It is better to start with the plasma treatment first, then heal, and then undergo the injectable treatments.
• Clients with pacemakers or cochlear implants cannot be treated.
• Mitral Valve Prolapse: will need prophylactic antibiotics, just like before dental procedures.
• Pregnant or breastfeeding women cannot receive treatment.
• Clients taking insulin, Antabuse, anticoagulants like warfarin, gold therapy for rheumatoid arthritis, Roaccutane/Accutane for acne, steroid or cortisone creams cannot be treated. Clients taking aspirin or ibuprofen may be treated, but there is a higher risk or bruising/bleeding. Clients taking thyroxin for a thyroid disorder may be treated, but the skin will be more sensitive.
• Clients with a history of retinal detachment, seizures/epilepsy, keloid scars, or vitiligo cannot be treated.
• We use a topical numbing cream for the treatment containing lidocaine and tetracaine. Clients allergic to these anesthetics cannot be treated.
• Contact lenses and eyelash extensions cannot be worn during treatment and must be removed.
